With a total of 426 rooms, suites, and villas, including 68 water bungalows, the Sun Island in the Maldives is the largest private-island resort in the Maldives. It's also among the cheapest, especially for the overwater rooms, so if price is a major factor then this resort offers good value.
Catering to many large tour groups and families, the all-inclusive plans here are the most popular. With a relatively large island and a long list of dining and recreational facilities, Sun Island Resort is ideal for active groups on a budget, but probably less than ideal for honeymoons or those in search of a secluded romantic holiday.
The Sun Island Resort & Spa is located on Nalaguraidhoo Island in the South Ari Atoll, 107 kilometers south of the Malé International Airport.

To reach the Sun Island Resort & Spa you’ll first fly to Malé International Airport. From there you’ll be greeted by resort staff and helped aboard a sea plane for the 35-minute flight to Nalaguraidhoo Island and the hotel itself. Alternatively, guests can take a 2 hour and 40 minute speedboat ride from the airport to the resort.
Generally the Sun Island Resort & Spa gets favorable reviews, although more mixed than most other resorts in the Maldives. Considering this is the largest and perhaps cheapest of the private-island resorts in the area, the reviews are quite good, but it’s important not to compare it to one of the 4- or 5-star resorts, as it doesn’t match up. With that said, many do praise the beach and the views, stating that the beauty is incomparable.
Overall most guests are very happy with the wide range of restaurants, bars and activities available, and the resort seems ideal for large groups and families, but probably not ideal for honeymooners unless they are on the tightest of budgets but still want an overwater bungalow in the Maldives.
